Jeff Betsworth, Intro, Sam Fischer

Intro  00:01
Welcome to cowboys not eggheads; home of the brave, not home of the fearful. The world needs more cowboys and fewer eggheads. We're everywhere podcasts are found. So tell your fellow cowboys and let's keep the conversation alive on Facebook and Twitter. And now, cowboys, not eggheads with Sam Fischer

Jeff Betsworth  00:33
what they said in church today. It was a good one about judging, not judging.

Sam Fischer  00:37
My favorite thing for the sermon mount is Judge not lest ye be judged.

00:41
Oh, must have been similar. Yeah, that's what they talked about today at St. Wentz. Yeah. Actually went to …

Sam Fischer  00:4
Hey everyone!  Jeff Betsworth is back on. How are you today, Jeff? Hey, good. Yeah, Hey
00:53
there you want me to use my radio voice? Hello, everyone. Hello, everyone.

Sam Fischer  00:57
He's back. He begged to be back. But we have we have reason for you to be back. And I guess you got some followers out there. Because my, the last episode was pretty well downloaded. So because I'm pimp and a whore. I'm going to go ahead and have you back on the show. Sweet. My friend ….so soon friends of Jeff and I know that we've been kind of bantering back and forth with our little JB productions. videos. So does a cowboy go ice fishing and an egghead go on a cruise? Is that the deal?

Jeff Betsworth  01:26
I think so. Probably that's probably what it was.

Sam Fischer  01:29
Eggheads  are frightened of cruises because of COVID. But I don't know. Yeah,

01:32
I've never been on a cruise. But I'd rather ice fish. My wife would rather go so my wife would rather go south also. So yeah, me. I like to go north. Yeah.

Sam Fischer  01:42
So you've been I haven't seen Jeff. And he usually just somebody I see pretty much on a daily basis, because go see him at the gym . But I haven't seen you in I don't know, three weeks. Yeah, that's right. I mean, three. Jeff, is. Are you done now? Are we done?

01:57
I know. That's, that's what my wife said. How long have you back for? I said, I'm leaving Thursday, Thursday, Thursday, Thursday to Sunday. And then so so the next to Thursdays to Sundays. We have trips and then trying to squeeze Canada in twice in March.

Sam Fischer  02:12
Oh, you're not far from done. So you're about halfway done. Oh, yeah. Yeah. So how many so use for the record you? It's just the beginning years. Tell everybody just give a quick synopsis of where you've been?

02:23
How long? You know, I started the trip with a two week trip. We went to Devil's Lake, North Dakota for five days. Okay. And then we went to Mobridge South Dakota fished a walleye tournament that we're in every year. Yep. For five days. Yeah. So that was a 10 day trip. I came home the next week. We went to Clark, South Dakota, and fished that for four days. And then And then where was it then Okoboji? We fish that we fish twice in South Dakota. We went back there twice. So as far as the Clark area, and then we just got back from a two week trip. Two weeks a bucket list trip. It was started in Okoboji, Iowa, went to Clark South Dakota went to Mobridge South Dakota and then went to Fort Peck Montana

Sam Fischer  03:10
now, okay, so South Dakota, Montana,

03:12
I knew Oh, yeah. If we wouldn't, you know, our driver, so we would have driven it straight. It would have been 15 hours, you know? Yeah. But we had like four different legs. We stopped and fished for different places. It was a while where Okoboji we fished a bluegill tournament. Yeah, I

Sam Fischer  03:26
don't know. I mean, between South Dakota and Montana.

03:30
We fished in Mobridge , South Dakota and then Clark, South Dakota.

Sam Fischer  03:37
But did you fish in between between? No, not between mobile and car drivers from Clark, South Dakota to Montana? Oh,

03:44
that was like eight hours? No. 10 Yeah, that's 10 hours. Yeah.

Sam Fischer  03:50
You should have stopped at Merritt Resevior there for

03:53
like two but I would say what a beautiful drive.

Sam Fischer  03:57
Oh, yeah. So you you're up on I 90 Or no, I Well, I 90 right

04:03
for a little while. We purposely took took a lot of highways, going through a lot of own towns like Lamone Lamone, South Dakota. There's a lot of like dinosaur museums. And it's, it's really cool because you'll see the L E M M O N I don't know. Lemon, lemon, lemon, lime, my friend name of our boat, two lemons and a lime. There's a story behind that….

Sam Fischer  04:31
I'm sure there is. So you went to South Dakota then you went to what my Wyoming and in Montana, right?

04:38
Yeah, just Montana. Just Yep. So we ended. Our last destination was Fort Peck Montana because we've never fished

Sam Fischer  04:45
but I mean, did you drive through Wyoming on the way to Montana? No, no, no, I

04:49
want to go to South Dakota, Jr, South Dakota, North Dakota, and then over to Montana. I didn't even look at a map. And we've been carrying old school Atlas. I have one of my seat. Yeah.

Sam Fischer  05:01
So how's the weather for you?

05:02
I mean, windy, windy. Yeah, it was nice. But every day was just wind. And when they say it's gonna be 45 degrees in Montana, you're thinking, Oh, great. I mean, shoot and be walking around on a t shirt out there on the ice. NO, with 35 mile an hour winds, it feels like it's 10

Sam Fischer  05:19
What is the objective of these trips other than have fun? Because you I mean, you actually are harvesting fish. I mean, do you have a goal of how many pounds of fish you want to catch? Well, you know, obviously, we as you pretty said that you have between what 80 and 100 pounds for your fish for fish ratio. So how many how are you here today? How many pounds of fishing? I

05:36
don't know. I'm a little bit behind because I didn't get a lot of I didn't get my limits of bluegill and perch from Okoboji, like I usually do from Iowa. Okay, you know, you're only allowed so many fish. When it comes to fish like that. Cat fish …..Northern, you can have as many as you want. But um, but I didn't do because we didn't go to we didn't go to Okoboji much in June and that's when the blue gills are biting on the docks. And that's, you know, when I usually kind of clean up and get my limits to those um, so we got a lot of catfish. We got a lot of lake trout, Fort Peck Montana

Sam Fischer  06:06
and very arge lake trout. Oh, make sure we we post that we're gonna

06:10
talk about my wall monitor. Yes. My wall mounter  …  bout how nine pounds? nine pounds three ounces. Wow. And no, wait a minute. Wait a minute. Levin pounds. Yeah, bigger than I did catch a nine pounder but is 11 pounds, three ounces. That's 30 inches long

Sam Fischer  06:26
will pose a huge

06:27
belly. Yeah, I mean, oh my god.

Sam Fischer  06:30
Okay to give people a I don't know, what's the normal? I mean, what's the state record? I mean,

06:37
the state record is like 33 pounds. Okay. Yeah, so their

Sam Fischer  06:43
usual fish, but it was a fun route I love and pound to trout. He didn't just lay down and die. Did

06:49
I mean no. Like hell? Oh, yeah. Your poles are bending. And, I mean, when you're fishing these things, you're an 80 foot of water. So you're fishing at foot of water and you're using these huge jigs and you're constantly never ice fishing at four. Yep. And you know, and you're moving a lot. That's a lot of lined up a lot of water. A lot of water. And we're fishing with these fighting at feed officers all Oh, yeah. Listen to this story. So you're, you're pulling your bait up off the bottom and they're chasing it so when they see it and you see him and you mark them on your flasher you're really going away from him.

Sam Fischer  07:22
I don't know what marking on flashing. What. What are you talking about?

07:27
It's called the Vex lar. And I don't know I've never called a flasher so basically it will show you the the bottom of the of the lake where you're fishing and then when your bait goes down it will read it will sense your bait so you can actually see your bait moving up and down. When a fish comes in you can see the fish

Sam Fischer  07:47
and then that's your Teasing that fish and nothing up yep really my buddy had one so is there anything wrong with the fish gets right away before you can see it? Oh

07:57
no no no lake trout they grab it you better hang on

Sam Fischer  08:01
hang on you better this case your Levin pounder you saw him you can see it's a big sucker to yeah so I'm taking it away from so you're taking away from and he's chasing it chasing it fast. Okay, as fast as I could real I mean hand over hand. Yeah, just

08:15
my spinning. Tip up gotcha and I'm rolling as fast as I can like see this and these two lines just meet that's when my poll literally drew bends in half and I have two hands

Sam Fischer  08:29
how many feet from a surface was

08:30
he a step he was probably 60 feet yet okay from the surface

Sam Fischer  08:35
its a  20 foot chase and chase and you got on these reels

08:38
yeah What'd you call it dry

Sam Fischer  08:39
and what was what was the what was a lawyer or

08:42
what was it? Yeah, what was a kid I call it the I call it the Stormtrooper Jighead just because it looks like a stormtrooper head yeah, you know with a huge hook and then a paddletail Like remember those Mr. twisters that were real popular? Yeah, giant Mr. Twister with a paddle tail. You know, I mean, okay.

Sam Fischer  09:02
You know I don't have to Google it.

09:04
Our truce. Mr. Twister is one of my favorite lures when I was a teenager Twister

Sam Fischer  09:08
your first or Twister Alright, so he's but it says a little color. Got a little color in it. No, it's white. It's all white. It's all all this fish sees once they learn the fish things that's what

09:19
Yeah, well, these fish they eat what the call what is the name Cisco's in a Cisco is a little fish. That's looks kinda like a chub. It's like 10 inches, eight to 10 inches long. And we cleaned one fish that had three Cisco's in it. So basically, you're just trying to imitate something and a lot of times too if you just piss these fish off. You know what I mean? You're you're ticking them off, you know the putting something in front of them, then you're taking it away.

Sam Fischer  09:45
You're saying oh yeah, I'll

09:47
pound the bottom you know, boom, boom, boom, you know, pull it up. yank it out. So he's the boss. He

Sam Fischer  09:51
thinks he's won by the lottery.

09:55
Yeah, let's go on in

Sam Fischer  09:56
60 feet of from fish to betsy.  And then what happened

10:01
oh yeah, didn't what happened my hand was tired from hanging out of the rod. And it's I mean it's taken you know and then you you gain on a little bit and then goes again you gain on it goes again. So it's a heck of a fight. It's probably it's the best fighting fish. Yeah, and I've ever caught a trout. Oh, yeah. Oh my

Sam Fischer  10:18
gosh. And they so how long how long a fight was a sucker.

10:23
I would say that one was probably 1215 minutes. Wow, my buddy fought one for over 20 He got a 17 pounder. Wow. 37 inches long. 37 inches is about the biggest they get in Fort Peck for Peck is 245 feet deep, Sam Wow. Yeah. 245 feet .

Sam Fischer  10:43
So you're on the shallow side of the lake. Yeah, we're

10:44
crossing cracks and heaves actually three side by sides went in now how was the thickness the ice out? 16 inches. And you drove your truck out there? No. My Polaris. Yeah, yeah. But the three people went in because there will be there'll be cracks and open water. I'll be middle of nowhere be smart. Oh, yeah, you do. You got to go slow. We actually helped two guys get in. They lost their side by side. Yeah, I went out and went out and got them. We took them both back to their house. They were cold wet scared a …..

Sam Fischer  11:14
a real deal. So what is it like though once you get that sucker you know, you just had a 15 minute fight with is 60 feet below the surface and out out the hole. Oh,

11:24
you talk what is it? Like? I

Sam Fischer  11:25
mean, you see a lot he's hunting shows and stuff. It's like it's like you're one earth right or something so you celebrating? absolutely exhilarating. i You kind of you thank the fish for his life after

11:39
so yeah, you know, yes. Something I hold it and I admire it. And yeah, jump around like a little schoolgirl. Yeah, I mean, when you pull something like that through the ice, especially the accomplishment, especially the first day we were there. We did not mark a fish. We did not catch a fish the next day. And we say

Sam Fischer  11:54
just for my records. Yeah. When you say we didn't mark a fish means you didn't seem Damn fish , you

11:59
didn't see anything on our flashers. Yep. The next day. I want to move to another spot that exactly we did. And we did. But the way out there my buddy totaled his Ranger. He hit a crack, and it bent the frame so bad, so I had to tow him off the ice. So he's like, there he’s got this $30,000 Ranger. He just totaled. He hops in with us. And he's trying to pull it together. You know what I mean? We went out fishing. And I said, Hey, the fish Gods need to be good to you right now. Five minutes into the first hole. We drilled …., he catches a nine pounder, then he's gonna mount and we're just like jumping around. I mean, it was awesome. It was awesome. Sweat

Sam Fischer  12:37
so that particular day was a pretty good Day, what was your quantity that was a big, that was a big quality fish. But we are quantity we came

12:45
home with our limit, which is six a day six trout three a day six possession. So you can have so you get a two day possession. So we I got I brought my six and Don brought his six home was a smallest of the six, six pounds, six pounds. So it's at least six to 11 pounds, six sevens, eights, nines, elevens, all the way up to 17.

Sam Fischer  13:09
And that's so we all understand. So that's you caught probably 40 pounds of fish that day. Oh, yeah, quite a bit. So that's enough to feed. So just let's just put that into sustainability here and 40 pounds of fish and feed a family of five for a couple weeks within

13:27
162 days now I have no idea.

Sam Fischer  13:30
I don't either. But I mean, it was it was what I mean. It's so people understand that there's a lot of

13:41
substance  - you’re harvesting food.

Sam Fischer  13:43
Yeah.

13:44
Yep. harvesting food. You know, for the thrill of it. And then we have a big fish fry every year. So this year,

Sam Fischer  13:51
it'll be Friday, which is April

13:55
16 16 is a 16 Easter weekend. Yeah, I think it's which would be nice because we've had it you know, Easter in March. And it was cold, right? I mean, sometimes Easter can be nice.

Sam Fischer  14:06
And be nice. Yeah. We haven't gotten there yet.

14:09
But um, we won't be eating a lot of trout but I did smoke the trout today. I made just ate some.

Sam Fischer  14:17
Sorry Bri. I feel like little sugar staying um, yeah, but

14:21
it is fish. It was with a

14:23
Delicious.

14:24
Can I tell you what's in it? Please? Okay, first of all, I made my own brine

Sam Fischer  14:29
Bri  —- Bri Siegert  Put your Yeah, on your ear muffs. Oh, yeah. Okay. Cuz I did eat some.

14:37
Yeah, not much, though. Good. I was probably thanks. Can I Well, you wouldn't take one of my beers. No,

Sam Fischer  14:42
thank you. That's on record. I

14:43
did not drink your beer. Sam says he's off the sauce and I said good thing. We're not eating spaghetti. I

Sam Fischer  14:47
had my sauce on my career.

14:51
But the Brian is basically water brown sugar, onion powder, garlic powder. All good. So for high end yapper Yeah, good. And then it called for a cup of sugar Pete Schnapps, piOh boy. So I put a whole bottle in. So we reduce the alcohol snaps and then then the brown sugar, which is your sugar, and then

Sam Fischer  15:12
sugar and then another brown sugar. And that's your short brown.

15:15
How much more brown sugar? Really? No, no,

Sam Fischer  15:18
no shortage of brown sugar.

15:19
Oh my gosh, how much was it? It was like, like six cups. But this is just sign ups

Sam Fischer  15:24
for that one thing. No, no, no, no, I

15:26
have a whole. Okay, dude in my truck. I have a lot of smoke to this.

15:31
Okay. All right. So six cups of sugar for all that's for the for the Brine. Brine. Yeah, okay.

Sam Fischer  15:38
It's just Brian. Yeah, it's

15:40
awesome. So take all that six cups into it. It's just sugar water boys and girls suck into it. Yeah, but it's tasty. Yeah, it's

Sam Fischer  15:48
fantastic. I mean, listeners it literally was.

15:52
I think I did. Well, I hate that word. Literally. It that's really not a good

Sam Fischer  15:57
I feel like I feel like it had a sweet no actually you can I think it was sweet. Yeah, well that I did use it and I am seeing right now where every time she says I feel like no you think and every time I say I think she says no you feel you feel Yeah, feel Thank you feel Jeff Betsworth  I think but anyway,

16:17
I digress. Cheese. That's probably pretty true statements.

Sam Fischer  16:19
Yeah, pretty much. Mm hmm. So it was it was a good trip.

16:28
It was. Let me tell you a little bit about something I learned real quick. Yeah. Fort Peck, it's the first dam on the Missouri River. Just a little bit of history because this this intrigues me and you know me I don't like to read Yeah, I know

Sam Fischer  16:42
it was the Missouri of they're pretty narrow or is a big are they loyal?

16:44
Oh no. It starts out or you know, basically from the melted well from the mountains. And it was just like it is here. But 1933 Teddy Roosevelt, he decided it was right after the depression 1000s of people moved up there. .

Sam Fischer  17:00
Franklin Roosevelt not Teddy but

17:02
those teddy bears. Theodore 1933. Yeah. Yep. He wasn't President. Yes, yes. Well, uh, yeah, he was no dude. He was. Are you sure? I'm

Sam Fischer  17:12
dead serious? FDR.

17:15
Oh, yeah. Okay, I

17:16
got I got the Teddy

17:18
Roosevelt's messed up. turn of century so he did the bad. So he, it's okay. It's just a it's just an egghead Detail anyway. Yeah. But anyway, about one of those damn Rosevelts, Rosevelts. Guys. He was a big, you know, wilderness guy. He, you know, he ended up owning some land in the Dakotas. A Ranch, you know, at one time.

Sam Fischer  17:39
Oh, Teddy. Yeah, so maybe I'm wrong.

17:41
I think it is. I think Yeah. Geez, I

Sam Fischer  17:44
gave up easy. Hey, Siri, when Teddy Roosevelt died >. I gave up really easy if I was right now. Well, I don't think if you are on a ranch, but anyway.

17:53
Anyway, but anyway, so 1000s of people move there in face the elements to build the first dam on the Missouri River, which is you know, you have quite a few of them working your way down. The last one being in Yankton. Yeah. So 60 people died in the making of it. It took like seven years. There. Six people actually in tuned is I don't know if that's the right word. Yeah. Into the dam. I mean, the history of it was really, really cool. And they didn't build the next dam in which a Sequoia I believe in North Dakota, to like the 60s, huh. 30 years later, 30 years later, you know? Yeah, but anyway, just it was right after

Sam Fischer  18:32
dam. So you did you see where you were you able to see the river before as a portion of the dam. And then obviously, the dam dams it up and then there's no way but were you able to see both sides of the thing. Mm hmm. And so my question is this river comes into the dam. Is it a big river small river small river small? Yep. I mean, not like not like Missouri out here. You know,

18:56
it starts actually smaller than the Missouri Yeah, I heard a story about a guy that I worked with. We are talking about his three River. Yep, Missouri River. Yeah, yeah.

Sam Fischer  19:07
Yeah. I was just curious that you know, it starts small and dam the  thing up and Dam, control it all the way down. You can throw it in there were no dams. Genuine. We're level. I mean, we probably be underwater right

19:21
here. Probably. Yeah. Be a fast raging river, like Missouri is kind of as it hits us, you know what I mean? Because we have a lot of current that thing you know, depending on you know, if there was a lot of snow in the mountains, yeah, it melts. Oh, yeah. The the, you know, you'd be you'd have some flooding you know, I mean, this dam and then there's like houses and towns church underneath these places, you know, wow. Yeah. Pretty. It's pretty cool. So so we're

Sam Fischer  19:48
not worried. Where do you stay when you go on these exploits and where's your bed? Always lay your head

19:53
you know, I got this little trailer and Clark that I like to stay at. You know, all their water pipes. are run, like in the corner of the inside , South Dakota Clark, South Dakota, so I stay there a lot. I have a buddy of mine and Moe bridge that we stay at his place. He's an outfitter. Just adventures. In Montana. We rented a place next to the bait shop. Yeah, slept. Yeah, three. Yeah, just I mean, pretty limited and, you know, small. I mean, the furnace was inside one of the bedrooms. And that was also your dining room. And but we're not there to fish. No,

Sam Fischer  20:28
you're not a Ritz Carlton. Yes. No, I'm just curious. Yeah. How bad your

20:33
fun. Give me a soft bed at the end of the day after fishing all day. And I'm happy. There you go. I don't ask for much, Sam. I mean, easy man to please.

Sam Fischer  20:43
Hey, Betsy, do you have any funny stories from

20:46
Oh, I do have an ice fishing joke. Oh, I got a lot of funny stories. But I didn't know we're gonna be funny, but I'll think of them here. So here, how do you how do you catch a polar bear Sam? By his tail. Well, no. You drill a hole in the ice and you set like a can of pees. You put peas around the ice hole. Right. Okay. And when that polar bear comes up to grab a P, you kick it in the ice hole. Really comes up to take a piece sorry, I said that any kicker kicker right in the ice hole in the ice hole when it comes to take

Sam Fischer  21:23
North Dakota, Montana.

21:25
Oh, yeah. You know, up there. You know, there

Sam Fischer  21:29
were any good stories, though. I mean, with you and Dawn and yeah, and son, right? Yeah.

21:33
Yo, yo, Conner and Don were with us. Well, this last trip was just done and I alright, for a couple weeks. So you know, and you know, you got to really like somebody to spend two weeks with him. You really know anyway, I'm ready. I mean, at

Sam Fischer  21:48
night it was Don ready for a break was he?

21:50
I think we both were probably I think that's why our wifes like you know to give them a break. Yeah. He's like you're so lucky. I'm

Sam Fischer  21:58
same time you're out with Don. I'm on ship with my wife. We're

22:02
fine. Yeah, it's

Sam Fischer  22:03
getting a little dicey dude. Yeah.

22:05
I spent the last three days with her. We've had a good time before I hit the road again. Yeah, it's almost like I'm doing station somewhere. You're going back out with Don then? Yeah, well, no trip actually. We're going to take my I bought a new permanent ice house. And you can sleep Oh, yeah. This

Sam Fischer  22:22
is the one that's got this is where satellites. it's 60 degrees today. There's still ice and boat. Oh, yeah.

22:29
Up north. We're gonna go to Clark, South Dakota and we're gonna actually camp in it.

Sam Fischer  22:33
We're gonna load you for next three day. No. Oh, you're going to car South Dakota. Oh,

22:36
yeah. The Shack. My cousin's gonna pull that up and we're gonna, we're gonna camp out on the ice. You're gonna show on a pole. You're gonna pull this nice shack up. There he is. Yep, he's gonna pull that and I'm gonna pull my Ranger. Gotcha. So you'll be right on the ice. Oh, yeah, all night. And you know what, Sam? There's a lot of big walleyes that are caught at night. A lot of big what time I'm pretty three o'clock in the morning or 11 o'clock at night. You know, you hear stories people say I have to reel my bait in because I get tired of catching him, you know, at midnight because I can't get any sleep. Unless I bring it on. You kidding me. So you set rattle reels. So you'd set this rattle reel and when something pulls on the line, it's got a bell in there and it starts to rattle wakes you up and wakes you up. Oh, grab it. Set the hook. catch a fish go back to bed. That's insane. Yeah, rebate it and we go to bed. You know, wake up, cook some breakfast.

Sam Fischer  23:27
So is this the one that has? You got like what it was so tough. Tell us about your little Shack there.
